Well, to no one's great surprise, here we are. 'Sympathy for the Devil' runs 6.18. It was written by Mick Jagger (though credited to Jagger/ Richards).

It appeared on the the 1968 album Beggar's Banquet. Placed it at #32 in their list of. 'Gimme Shelter' runs 4.37. It was written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. It appeared on the 1969 album Let It Bleed.

Rolling Stone placed it at #38 on their list. This poll will be up all day.The #2 song on the list lost in the first round if I remember. I voted Sympathy, but it is nowhere near my favorite Stones song. I love both.would've chosen 'Paint It Black' over both though. As for this matchup.geez.tough one but I'll take 'Gimme Shelter'.There's something about the background vocalist's performance.listen to that song and focus on her. She hits this one note while singing 'MURDER'.so high her vocal cords crack but in such a pure emotional way that you even here the background chatter of guys in the session kinda vocally applaud.Gimme Shelter is one of my all-time favorite songs.

The point where Merry Clayton's voice cracks is incredible. And there is a little crack in her voice on the line that precedes it - you get the feeling that she felt it a buckle a little on that first one, and it surprised her, and she made a split-second instinctual decision to push the next line even harder, rather than retreat when she felt that crack.

She almost consciously knew that by taking the chance to push it even more would result in something that would convey her emotion even more effectively. It’s called soul. I am trying to define 'soul.' The best part is that if you listen really closely, after she sings that part, you can hear Mick off mic exclaim, 'whoa!'
